So what is it that causes these ”blood sucking beasts” to hunt us down for a cocktail?   The things about humans that mosquitoes are attracted too are the carbon dioxide and lactic acid that we routinely exhale everyday. Mosquitoes smell these elements and are drawn to its source. When you apply the appropriate essential oils (in the right proportions…as many oils can not be used unless diluted with a carrier oil) to your skin, it can cover the scent of your exhalations and, as a result, prevent bug bites.

According to the Department of Agriculture, soybean oil (as found in Scandle Lotion Candles and Body Massage Candles) can be an effective deterrent for mosquitoes. It is estimated that the amount of time of effectiveness ranges anywhere from 2 to 8 hours.

Geraniol, which can be extracted from lemon grass (found in Scandle’s Healing & Deep Muscle Blends) and geranium (found in Scandle’s Tranquility Blend) has also been shown in tests to be quite an effective repellent against mosquitoes as well as many other types of bugs. The University of Florida conducted tests on approximately 3,900 mixtures over a 15-year period, and geraniol proved to be among the most proficient in providing protection against mosquitoes.

Tea Tree Oil (found in Scandle’s Soothing & Healing Blends) are also effective for repelling mosquitoes, it also works to repel ants and lice, and can aid in the removal of ticks.  It can be applied to insect bites as an antiseptic.

Your customers spend a lot of time prepping their bodies for summer. Weather that be through hair removal, sunless tanning, manicures, pedicures, or body scrubs…it’s time to take a look at your current retail and service offering and remove any vestiges of spring or winter.

Skin care services for summer should focus on body treatments, manicures and pedicures, and should incorporate and highlight scrubs (like Scandle’s Dead Sea Salt Soak & Scrub or Scandle’s Hawaiian Turbinato Raw Sugar Scrub), oils and lotions that utilize scents, such as cucumber, citrus, melon, and coconut (like Scandle’s Sex on the Beach or Margarita Scented Massage Lotion Candle). These aromas tend to generate increased happiness and energy which leads to customers that are more willing to open their pocketbooks!;)  So make sure that you retail the products used in summertime treatments so clients can take home that “little bit o sunshine”!:)

What Products Should You Focus On?

Here’s a rundown of some of the things your customers will find most beneficial treatment and retail wise:

• Sunless Tanning - Offering sunless tanning treatments is a great way to give customers that “vacationed” look without the damaging effects of the sun on their skin. Offer a package that incorporates a body treatment scrub to reveal new skin cells, followed by the application of a sunless tanning product. At checkout offer some solutions that the customer can take home with them to prolong their sunless tan in the form of lotions (we recommend a Scandle Lotion Candle with added Shimmer to give skin a summer sexy glow), creams, and bronzers.

Sugar Scrubs- If you have very sensitive skin, a sugar scrub is your best bet.  Sugar scrubs (like Scandle’s Hawaiian Raw Turbinato Sugar Scrub) have smaller, finer granules than your typical salt scrub which makes it a soft and gentle exfoliant for your skin.  Sugar scrubs are great for hydrating and cleansing as they can be used to clear blemishes by absorbing oil and dirt.

Here are 7 tips that will help your business card collect clients and generate business for your practice:

• Make it Functional - Cards that multi-task stand out. Turn it into a bookmark, a calender, or a scratcher card for instance.

• Track It - Include a QR code or SKU on your business card, and whenever you hand it out, give the recipient an incentive like discounts or coupons for checking out your website, for instance.  By doing this, you’ll be able to gauge the effectiveness of your card.

• Engage and Amuse – To get your card to stand out from the pack, put a fun fact or question on it that applies to your business.  For instance, if you have a massage practice, something like “Did you know that the human body has about 640 muscles?” can be a great fun fact to generate conversation.

• Create Credibility – This can be done by using customer testimonials.  Consider adding a brief quote or link to a quote on the back of your business card.

• Support a Cause – Let people know what causes your practice supports.

• Put a Face with a Name - Consider putting your photo on your card so that people can continue to put a face with a name.

• Make the Hand-off Memorable – The act of giving someone your card can be a memorable experience.  Use it as a conversation starter.  For instance, you meet someone who has chronic lower back pain, hand them your card and tell them how you may be able to help.

Increasing your social media presence helps your Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and generates more traffic to your site.

Here are some of our favorite tips to help you make your content more share-worthy:

• Get on Google+ now.

• Make every single page on your site shareable on Facebook, Twitter, Google+, Pinterest and LinkedIn. (Make sure to add Scandle to your network as well by clicking on the links.)

• If you run an eCommerce site, consider making every single one of your products “pinnable,” for Pinterest.

• Create content that answers your potential customer’s questions and share that content through the appropriate social outlets.

• Create fun content that’s shareable.

• Written blog content is great, but don’t forget about visual content.  Don’t underestimate the power of images to drive traffic and sales!

• Look at social media as an extension of your customer service department. Don’t just delete comments and ignore them…it will make you look worse!

• Social media is a great way to attract new customers but it also should be used to promote and engage your employees/team members. Your TEAM is key to the success of your overall social media strategy and should be just as involved as you are!

No matter if your just starting your practice or have been in business for a number of years, we all need a helping hand from time to time.  Both government and private grants are a form of alternate funding for start up businesses or ones looking to expand and the beauty of grants is that, unlike loans, grants usually do not need to be paid back!  Now that’s beautiful!

Many grants are set up for certain types of businesses, such as woman-owned, veteran-owned, minority-owned, or over 65-owned. Here’s some that we thought our holistic health business owners could take advantage of.

• Federal or Government Grants – These are typically the most difficult to find and qualify for.  There are no grants for general start-ups, but many are offered for specific types of businesses, such as those in health related research or green initiatives.  So if you got a green spa…this may be something worth looking in to.   Grants.gov offers a comprehensive search tool.

• Private Grants – These are offered for all types of businesses, including start-ups. It is just a matter of taking the time to do the research, fill out the applications and making sure that the grant is legitimate. We’ve all seen the guy with the question marks all over his suit promising thousands of dollars in free money right?   Beware of any grant or grant finding agency that charges money for their services; they are generally scams. If you have any concerns about a grant that is offered, contact your local Better Business Bureau to check it out.

• Programs – These types of grants are available for all types of small businesses:

• Intuit’s Love Our Local Business offers grants of $5k.  You can enter yourself and vote for Scandle there as well.  When you enter, let us know your link below so we can vote for you!

• Woman-owned business grants are available at eileenfisher.com/grants

• The National Association for The Self Employed also offers grants up to $5,000 to help small businesses.
