Abaca – the gift that keeps on giving

Last week we launched our new Build Your Own Gift Sets. These sets, which include Scandle products, also come packaged in reusable and sustainable hand-woven gift totes made from abaca.

With the holiday season approaching I thought I would let y’all know why we think this packaging, whether it is holding a Scandle or not, is the best choice for your gift-giving solutions.

Abaca is a giant plant that resembles and is closely related to the banana plant. Abaca is native to the Philippines and has been used for hundreds of years to make rope, specialty papers and pulp.

The fiber from the plant is woven into textiles and the bark colored outer stalk is used for products like gift boxes, tote bags, baskets and even floor covering.

After the abaca is harvested, the products (hand bags, boxes, etc) are hand-woven in backyard looms by families or cottage industry groups. Not only are these items naturally beautiful, they are exceptionally durable, 100% biodegradable and are the best eco-friendly alternative to paper or petroleum based gift bags.

These backyard looms help sustain families in third world countries. When purchasing a product made from abaca you are helping families like Renelyn’s.

Renelyn’s family was one of many families provided with simple sewing machines and all the materials needed to create sustainable bags. At that time, she lived crowded with other relatives.

Renelyn took on the work with dedication, attention to detail and quality; and solely on that income was able to build her own solid, concrete block home, providing a safe shelter for her and her sons.

So remember this season purchasing simple items like an earth-friendly product packaged in abaca can make a big difference that you think.
