Abaca is a giant plant that resembles and is closely related to the banana plant. Abaca is native to the Philippines and has been used for hundreds of years to make rope, specialty papers and pulp.

The fiber from the plant is woven into textiles and the bark colored outer stalk is used for products like gift boxes, tote bags, baskets and even floor covering.

After the abaca is harvested, the products (hand bags, boxes, etc) are hand-woven in backyard looms by families or cottage industry groups.
