Who would think that something as small as the razor you use to shave with could carry sharp costs both on your wallet and your health? Over the course of a year, it’s easy to spend hundreds of dollars on disposables and replacement blades, but how much is too much? And when do you need to replace them?
According to Genevieve Bochanty, consultant with The Art of Shaving, “You should change your blade every three to five shaves, or up to seven shaves if you have light hair. If you have coarse hair, make that every two to three shaves. Another way to know when it’s time to change a blade is when you get nicked, or have to go over the same portion of skin more than once.”
If you’re like me, you’re probably thinking if it still cuts like a razor…it must still be usable! WRONG! According to Bochanty, “…you can get something called folliculitis, which is bacteria that can build up in your razor and transfer to your skin causing pimples and irritation” if you use your razor for too long. (Ewww…)
So how do you achieve a clean close shave and shave costs at the same time?
- Shave during or after a shower when hair is softest from warm/heated water.
- Invest in QUALITY shaving products like Scandle’s Eco-Shave & Shower Foam, which is infused with natural, plant derived, essential oils that help soften the hair and protect the skin. Quality shave products like these, can keep the skin moisturized and ingrown-hair free, as well. Sure, they cost a bit more than the bar soap, but as Bochanty points out, “You’re going to get a greater quality shave, and [your razors] will last longer over time.”
- Finally, base your razor purchase on your skin type, hair type and any skin sensitivities. For example, multiple blades take multiple layers of skin off. Five blades are going to take five layers of skin, so people with sensitive skin should probably stick with 1 blade. Also, another tip to get your razor to last longer… avoid letting it sit and rust in the shower…always hang dry it.
