Skin whitening treatments find a mainstream market in the US

Monday, March 12th, 2012

We’ve talked about the controversial ingredients in most skin “whitening” products, made popular in Asian markets. But a new survey finds these products are being sold over the counter in many department stores’ beauty sections in the US.

These new to the US market cosmetic products, which are available in department stores and beauty boutiques, don’t include strong (and potentially hazardous) ingredients to bleach the skin, like topical steroids. They also work without hydroquinone, a skin lightener that has been banned in some countries and can potentially lead to ocrinosis, or the transformation of the color of skin. Some of these potentially hazardous chemicals are found in their Asian market counterparts.

And they’re being marketed for all skin tones, to tackle everything from 20-somethings’ acne scars to the sunspots that tend to appear on skin as it ages.

So while these new products are labeled as “safe” we want to know, would you buy skin “lightening” products?

Pamper those paws - spring pedicure help

Wednesday, March 7th, 2012

Chances are, if you are like me, you’ve been waiting for that first sign of open-toe shoe day since October.

The temperatures this winter have been mild and it feels like summer is right around the corner. But, again if you are like me, your toes could use some serious TLC.

You can hit your favorite mani/pedi joint or you can DIY-it and save some green with the tips below:

Soak those feet! The best way to start a pedicure is to soften up the dead skin for easier removal.

Scrub! Well gently of course. Use a soft brush or pumice stone to gently remove dead skin and bring out the healthy skin buried under 3 months of winter.

Moisturize. Use an all natural heavy lotion or your favorite Scandle Candle to apply a think layer and pop on some socks. Leave the socks on for at least 2 hours or overnight for best results.

Polish those toes. Trim back your cuticles, clean out that dirt and file down those claws. Add your favorite polish. I’m really loving the new spring nail polish colors out there – ruby reds, bright pinks and electric blues!

Here at Scandle, we are all about multipurpose products. Just in time for sandal-wearing weather, our new Scandle Candle treatment kits are out. This kit has everything you need to get those toes in tip top shape - a Scandle Candle travel tin, a Renewing Foot Scrub and an energizing foot and leg mist. All of these pedicure must haves come packaged in a reusable cosmetic bag, handmade of colorful patches of recycled sarees.

Spring forward - don’t be caught with red eye

Tuesday, March 6th, 2012

We lose an hour of sleep this Sunday, it’s daylight savings time again! While it may not seem like a lot of time, when you have a pretty hectic schedule an hour less of sleep can feel like you haven’t slept at all. Beat the usual daylight saving time “hangover” with these three tips:

Give yourself a head start! Move up your bed time a little at a time (don’t forget the kids too). Start today with 10 minute increments both going to bed and waking up. Next Monday’s wake up time won’t be so hard if you start now.

Manage your light. Expose yourself to light (preferably natural) as early as you can when you first wake up. Light can help reset your body’s internal clock. Same goes with bed time – avoid light to ease your internal clock to snooze time.

Don’t nap! At least until you are use to the new time.

Tropi-Kale Stuffed Avocados

Friday, March 2nd, 2012

Spring has sprung up a little early and we are ready to get our fresh greens. If you are in the spring entertaining mood, try these raw, vegan stuffed avocados to impress your guests and get a ton of antioxidants and vitamins.

INGREDIENTS

    2 cups thinly sliced kale
    1/4 teaspoon salt
    juice of one lime
    1 tablespoon cold-pressed coconut oil
    1 clove of garlic, minced
    1/2 cup diced pineapple
1/4 cup diced red ball pepper
    2 tablespoons chopped cilantro
    2 tablespoons chopped scallions
    1/8 teaspoon chipotle pepper
    2 avocados

INSTRUCTIONS

Toss the kale and salt in a large bowl. Massage the kale by hand, causing it to soften and wilt. Proceed for several minutes until the kale is very soft.

Add lime juice, coconut oil and garlic and massage a bit more to flavor the kale.

Toss in pineapple, bell pepper, cilantro, scallions and chipotle. Mix very well.

Cut your avocados in half and remove the pit. If the hole left by the pit is very small, you may wish to scoop out a bit of the flesh to make room for the stuffing.

Divide the kale mixture into four equal portions and fill the avocados. Serve immediately. If you wish to prepare the kale salad in advance, just keep the avocados whole until ready to serve to prevent browning.

Stomach sleeping equals wrinkles!

Thursday, March 1st, 2012

I’ll admit it, sometime I enjoy a good stomach sleep position. I’ve heard it is not the ideal position but I can’t help it! I know it causes neck issues but wrinkles, wrinkles, now I have to stop!

By laying on your stomach, you are pushing your face directly into your pillow. That pressure plus your body’s natural heat production equals cellular deformation.

If you are a stomach sleeper like me, it’s not so easy to just switch sleeping positions. Here are some easy ways to switch that position:

Place pillows on both sides of your body. When you are tempted to flip over, there is an obstacle which may help deter the switch.

Grab a body pillow and place it in between your legs. This should add some extra comfort and keep you from slipping onto your stomach.

Use a neck support pillow to help you sleep on your back. Or, place a pillow under your knees to remove back pressure - making it more comfortable to sleep on your back instead of your stomach.

Are you a former stomach sleeper? How did you kick the habit?
