Treat your skin to pumpkin this Halloween

October 20th, 2010

Fall is in the air, I’ve got my Halloween costume ready to go and pumpkins are on the patio. While the pumpkin is the first sign of cooler nights and holiday parties, it is also an amazing natural resource.

Pumpkins are rich in nutrients that boost the health of the skin. Alpha- and beta-carotenes act as important antioxidants that boost immunity and slow the process of aging and pumpkins are full of them.

Fresh and cooked pumpkin is chock full of vitamin C, vitamin E, vitamin A, potassium, alpha-carotene, zinc, beta carotene, and lutein.

Not only does pumpkin benefit your insides, it is also great for your skin and a number of cosmetics and beauty product companies make skincare products that contain pumpkin enzymes as a leading ingredient.

From facial treatments and moisturizers to body treatments or wraps, pumpkin and pumpkin extracts can help your skin achieve a healthy glow even in the dead of cold.

Many spas offer pumpkin geared treatments this time of year, or opt to create your own spa day at home with this great receipt below, oh and don’t forget your Pumpkin Pie Spice Scandle, this is the last month for our limited-edition fall fragrances and to be entered in our Halloween Treat Giveaway for the last one this season!

The blow up on the Brazilian Blowout

October 19th, 2010

The Brazilian Blowout, a hair treatment which promises to turn frizzy foes into silky, smooth locks, has come under some serious heat regarding a serious ingredient – formaldehyde.

The treatment, which has gained extreme popularity in the US and Canada, is one of the top selling treatments in most upscale hair salons.

Last month, a hairstylist in Oregon prompted an investigation into the claims that the product was formaldehyde free. She says she gave the treatment to around 20 clients before she started to experience strange symptoms including chest pains and a soar throat. Many other people have reported nausea and headaches.

The Oregon Health & Science University’s Center for Research on Occupational and Environmental Toxicology began testing samples of the Brazilian Blowout in her salon and found formaldehyde levels between 8.85 percent and 10.6 percent — far higher than the 0.2 percent considered safe by the Cosmetic Ingredient Review Panel.

Health Canada reported to have received numerous reports of burning eyes, nose, and throat, breathing difficulties, and even one report of hair loss associated with the use of the product. It believes the reactions were caused by the irritant becoming aerosolized during the blow drying and flat ironing stages of the treatment.

Brazilian Blowout of California, who makes the product, claims the hair straightener is 100 percent safe. Last week, the US distributor of the Brazilian Blowout, Cadiveu, called for an update in standardized testing regarding formaldehyde and claims the results conducted against its products are incorrect.

What do you think? Have you ever had a Brazilian treatment or something similar, let us know your results…….

Skin discoloration goes high-tech

October 18th, 2010

Alright all you workaholics, put the laptop down or at least off your lap. Why you might ask, well there is a new skin issue that may be attributed to your high-tech pal.

Skin discoloration can appear on any part of your body, not just your face. The sun is still the number one cause of skin discoloration but recently there is a high-tech culprit behind the rise in leg-specific discoloration – your laptop!

Erythema ab igne, also known as toasted skin syndrome, is caused by an overexposure to a heat source without an actual burn. At first dermatologists were stumped by this red, brown sponge-like rash appearing on their patients’ thighs but after some simple research there was one common factor – long periods of laptop use.

Most manufactures include warnings in their user manual but if you are like me you probably never opened the thing But I had no idea that some device can get over 100 degrees, multiply that by a couple of hours of web surfing and you could definitely do some damage.

Although the name may sound a little silly, it can cause permanent skin damage and although it has not been directly linked to skin cancer, it can cause damage that can lead to squamous cell skin cancer.

So what’s a girl to do in this high-tech world? It’s simple really – just make sure there is always a barrier between you and your laptop (carrying case, tray, etc).

Abaca - the gift that keeps on giving

October 12th, 2010

Last week we launched our new Build Your Own Gift Sets. These sets, which include Scandle products, also come packaged in reusable and sustainable hand-woven gift totes made from abaca.

With the holiday season approaching I thought I would let y’all know why we think this packaging, whether it is holding a Scandle or not, is the best choice for your gift-giving solutions.

Abaca is a giant plant that resembles and is closely related to the banana plant. Abaca is native to the Philippines and has been used for hundreds of years to make rope, specialty papers and pulp.

The fiber from the plant is woven into textiles and the bark colored outer stalk is used for products like gift boxes, tote bags, baskets and even floor covering.

After the abaca is harvested, the products (hand bags, boxes, etc) are hand-woven in backyard looms by families or cottage industry groups. Not only are these items naturally beautiful, they are exceptionally durable, 100% biodegradable and are the best eco-friendly alternative to paper or petroleum based gift bags.

These backyard looms help sustain families in third world countries. When purchasing a product made from abaca you are helping families like Renelyn’s.

Renelyn’s family was one of many families provided with simple sewing machines and all the materials needed to create sustainable bags. At that time, she lived crowded with other relatives.

Renelyn took on the work with dedication, attention to detail and quality; and solely on that income was able to build her own solid, concrete block home, providing a safe shelter for her and her sons.

So remember this season purchasing simple items like an earth-friendly product packaged in abaca can make a big difference that you think.

Stem cell facelift - fabulous or fiction?

October 7th, 2010

Okay, so I don’t know if it is just me but it seems that every couple of months there is some new, invasive, miracle treatment that has found the illusive ‘fountain of youth.’

I have got a new one for y’all and I want you to let me know what you think. The newest fad procedure, the “stem cell facelift,” involves injecting your own stem cells and fat cells into your face for an alleged rejuvenating effect.

Several cosmetics, nutraceuticals and device makers claim either to use stem cells in their products or to use ingredients that activate the customer’s own stem cells but several scientists have voiced their opinion regarding the advertising claims on many of these products and procedures.

The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery agrees with many of these scientists – there is no bases in scientific evidence that these new products provide any of the benefits they claim to.

Also, although stem cells have incredible potential for cosmetic procedures no one has conducted any testing on them for that specific reason.

But the facilities that offer some of these treatments claim that the procedure is safe and effective. Some claims state that human fat is an excellent source of adult stem cells and by transplanting the carefully harvested fat, they eliminate any potential for an allergic reaction because it comes from your body and goes back into your skin.

So lets talk, what’s your side? Yeah or nah? Is there any validity or better yet, have you had one, tell us your side…….

Massaging the migraine

October 5th, 2010

Yesterday we talked about fatigue and the random, yet serious things that can cause it. One serious side effect of fatigue is chronic headaches.

Chronic headaches are not uncommon, especially in today’s fast-paced work and home environment. But chronic headaches are a serious problem and can lead to neck and back pain.

Many people turn to aspirin and other pain reducing medications but if you are one of the thousands of people who suffer 2-3 headaches a week, taking that much medication a week is not good for you either.

Here is where holistic medicine comes in, well its not really medication as much as therapy - massage.

Here are the three most common types of headaches and some recommended therapy option:

  • Migraines. These occur when blood vessels in the brain become dilated, usually due to a chemical reaction (such as food allergies or stress).
  • Tension headaches. This type is caused by poor posture, jaw problems and neck pain - stress also exaggerates the severity.
  • Mixed headaches. When a tension headache leads to a migrain. Typically, the tension starts first and the chemicals produced from the pain create the perfect storm for a migraine. The best way to avoid the onset of a migraine is to treat the tension headache.

Therapies:

  • Swedish massage. This massage type promotes relaxation and relieves muscle tension (they don’t call them tension headaches for nothing). So if you are prone to tension headaches opt for a Swedish massage. When muscles become tight due to stress or poor posture, they eventually adapt a chronically shortened state. Swedish massage teaches the body how to let go of muscle tension and resets muscle tone.
  • Deep Tissue. Chronically tensed muscles maintain tension even after a stressful event has passed. Deep tissue techniques free the connective tissue glue, creating a new way for those muscles to function.
  • Reflexology. This treatment works by moving energy blockages in the body. By stimulating points on the feet that correspond to organs in the body, reflexologists can promote relaxation, reduce pain, and restore energy flow. Several scientific studies have shown that reflexology is a viable treatment for migraines.

Do you suffer from chronic headaches? Would you use massage therapy as an alternative to medications?

Fatigued? Get some sun

October 4th, 2010

Happy Monday y’all it is beautiful today, really feels like fall. Speaking of fall, have you seen the Halloween Treat Giveaway going on this month? If not check it out, today’s post is the first post this month!

Since it is another manic Monday here I thought we could talk about energy and the lack there of. Did you know that fatigue is the most common complaint women bring to their doctor?

Not only do most women not get enough rest, being tired isn’t just annoying, sometimes it can be your body’s cry for help. Fatigue can eventually affect your health and we all know what dark circles can do for our complexion.

We are all to familiar with the bigger causes of fatigue – bills, new job or no job, kids, significant other, you get the idea. But here are some very common causes of fatigue that are not so well known:

  • Shunning the sun. That’s right a lack of sunlight can cause fatigue. If the body is not exposed to natural sunlight it can go into sleep mode. Try to squeeze in a 10 minute walk outside at least once a day, especially when you are most tired- bright sunlight has a caffeine-like power to make you more alert.
  • Couch potato syndrome. Sitting in one position for long periods of time can drain your energy – another example of the body’s natural response to “sleep time” – if it’s not moving it must be time for sleep. Staring at a screen makes it even worse, so move around ever once in a while.
  • Irregular sleep cycle. Your body’s internal clock needs consistency. Sometimes a simple change in your sleeping pattern (i.e. the weekends) can have a hangover effect – causing you to feel foggy even though you have been awake for a while.
  • Mild dehydration. Yup, that’s right, when you feel thirsty, you’ve already lost 3 percent of your body fluid which can make you feel tired or lethargic. If you just cannot gulp down the liquids all day, eat fruits and veggies high in water content.
  • Bright lights at night. Mom was right, lights out to sleep Bright lights can reset your body’s internal clock and can also disrupt the body’s secretion of sleep-inducing melatonin.
  • Slouching. Poor posture doesn’t just make you look exhausted, it creates the feeling as well. When our joints are not aligned properly, our whole body works a lot harder and that can make us feel tired and achy.

How do you keep your energy up? What’s your favorite fatigue-fighting remedy?
